Ján Hála afresh in Lomnica

Paintings by Jan Hála can be interpreted in several ways and whether you are an advanced art devotee, or you are only making the first steps in the world of art and beauty, we are convinced that the most recent exhibition titled Ján Hála AFRESH IN LOMNICA deserves your attention. Our collection of Hála’s paintings has grown considerably and we are delighted that it also features the impressive and monumental painting of a puppet show located in some sort of cinema theatre. Pay us a visit to take a tour of Galéria Lomnica and rest assured that you will fall in love with the displayed paintings depicting the beauty of slovakness.

The Story of Slovak Women Expressed in Painting

In this exposition, women, girls, mothers, lovers or friends are perceived rather in an ethnically motivated – Slovak – morphology. If we desired to present the theme differently, perhaps more professionally, we would suggest that we are looking at a part of the Slovak story (or myth) expressed in painting. In this first part of the exposition, we therefore  explore the work of the outstanding modernisers of the rural and mountainous genre (Martin Benka, Gustáv Mallý, Jozef Teodor Mousson, Jan Hála, Janko Alexy, Júlis Bukovinský, Ľudovít Križan, Jaroslav Augusta), as well as authors who attempted to penetrate underneath the embroidered, lace-decorated and overall heroized surface of the Slovak female iconography (Miloš Bazovský, Imro Weiner-Kráľ, Mária Medvecká, Vincent Hložník, Milan Laluha, Vladimír Kompánek).

Universal Story of Women in Slovak Art

Metamorphoses of the female universe are the true theme of this whole collection. However, along with this interpretation we can perceive the exhibition in generational waves, since it was here, where the originally conventional – portrait-like, illustrative framework or context of the evening nudity (as a traditional academic discipline) – was modified.

A gallery that also offers you accommodation

The first lady of the Tatras boasts almost 500 art acquisitions capturing the truly amazing art-history development starting at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century with plein-air, luminist and impressionist tendencies, through classic Slovak interwar modern art until the revitalisation of the Slovak heritage in the generation of the Galandovci (the group following-up on the message of M. Galanda). The collection also comprises strong individual and supra-generational interwar tendencies and influences in Slovak art. The works of art are not only displayed in the hotel corridors and two dedicated galleries but are also in the respective hotel rooms so the Lomnica is quite rightfully (and originally, for that matter) labelled as a gallery that also offers accommodation.

Gallery Curator

“Still as a young historian of art, I had the opportunity to participate in opening of the gallery of M. A. Bazovský in the town of Trenčín. Later, as the administrator of the collections and Head of Professional Department I dedicated my career to extensive exhibition, publication, curating and pedagogical activity and also worked as a certified expert both at home and abroad. It makes me glad that I can make a full use of my many years of experience in the unique project of the Lomnica gallery.”
